First Barbecue, 2020

Preparing chicken and cauliflower for the first barbecue of the season.
The cauliflower is cut into "steaks."
It's also the first time we have chosen to eat meat for 3 or 4 weeks.
In the afternoon, Len had baked kaiser rolls.
Cauliflower and chicken on the fire. Both are seasoned with salt
and Simon and Garfunkle Rub -- parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Just off the grill: chicken and cauliflower, ready to eat.
On the table: wine, chicken, lettuce salad, rolls... delicious!
Last year we were able to barbecue a few times in April, but this year to date it's sometimes been cold, it's sometimes been raining, and it has constantly been made weird by the ongoing pandemic. We are just lucky that the rain hasn't been worse -- around 100 miles from us, in Midland, Michigan, severe floods have created a disaster situation. Every day we realize how lucky we have been so far during all the bad times that are happening in the world today.

That looks good. We've only cooked out twice this spring -- both times, chicken. I think Rick is planning to do a tenderloin tonight, although it's looking cold and gloomy, so maybe tomorrow instead. Haven't checked the weather but hope it holds. I am so done with rain! (Hats off to the Kaiser rolls and I love the S&G seasoning!)

Did you put oil on the cauliflower? Do pieces fall into the fire? How long does it need... receipe, please!

Recipe for Iris:
Cut cauliflower head into 1/2 inch slices (like fans) — reserve smaller pieces for another use.
Brush with oil and sprinkle with salt and mixed herbs.
Grill over coals for around 4 minutes or so per side, until a fork pierces easily, but not too soft.

Being vegetarian, I do not own a grill. However, we frequently have dinner with my kids who love to BBQ! I usually bring over a vegan burger for their grill- I love the idea of what you did with the cauliflower! I will try it at their house if we ever get back to visiting!

Question from Catalyst: where did we get yeast?

Answer: Our neighbors gave us a jar of yeast. At the beginning of buying groceries for delivery in March, they asked for a 3-packet yeast quantity, but the market didn't have any more packets so they sent 2 jars of yeast. The neighbors don't bake that much so they gave us one. Of course we gave them some bread!

Yum! I have never tried barbecuing cauliflower. We roast it, mash it, rice it, boil it and more but never barbecued it!

Grilling caulifower is new to me as well. I really would like to try that. Your meal looks delicious. I am glad you weren't flooded out. The news reported such horrible flooding and I was thinking of you.

I just cooked the last of my cauliflower and broccoli two nights ago. Had I thought, I would have saved the cauliflower and turned it into steaks when I cook out this Memorial Day. Yours looks wonderful and so do those rolls. I also see real butter, too. The only way to go in my opinion. It all looks good indeed.

Hmmm. I have a whole unopened cauliflower in the refrigerator and tomorrow is Memorial Day, a traditional day for a cookout!

That chicken looks fabulous! We grilled steelhead the other night and tonight I'm grilling carne asada for tacos. We're lucky to live somewhere that we can grill year-round, although I did that when we lived in Nebraska, too. Even when it was snowing. :)

Sounds as if everyone has been having a BBQ this past weekend, I've never had Cauli on the BBQ, my husband does grill Egg plant which is delicious

Good morning, Such a wonderful meal, I will try your cauliflower steaks soon looks and sounds delicious.
We missed the down pours of rain over the weekend, flooding sounds horrible in Michigan I heard two dams broke there-so awful to lose everything with something like that. We feel blessed as well

Yumm! That looks really nice. A typical summer BBQ meal. We haven't had the opportunity to cook outside yet (and we're in Spain, it's supposed to be hot!)
I had to smile at your Simon & Garfunkel rub. That is a really good way of saying it. I'll remember that one.
Cauliflower steaks are great. I only discovered them last year!

Great looking barbecue food. I read about that disaster in Michigan: how awful with all of the covid-19 problems going on, to have that happen. Ugh. Happy belated T-Day!
