Welcome Back, Great British Baking Show!

The 2019 season of the Great British Baking Show is being released week by week on Netflix, starting yesterday. This is a totally new way to do it this year. Americans now have to wait only a few days after each episode is shown on British TV, while every previous year (this is the 10th season, the seventh shown in the US!) we had to wait months to see it unless we were so impatient that we used a clever software device called a VPN to make the BBC think we were really watching IN England.

There have always been bits of campy British humor, and now it's really over-the-top. For the first episode, the four hosts were dressed up as the characters from the Wizard of Oz. I have no further comment on this. Except that Paul Hollywood makes an interesting Tin Man without a Heart, and always campy Noel Fielding makes a very special Dorothy. Don't worry: this was only on for a few moments and then they went on with the usual routine where 13 new contestants bake their hearts out to please Paul and Prue.

The "showstopper" contest in the initial episode, all about cakes, involved fantasy birthday cakes which of course were all remarkable. I really liked this snake cake which had an egg with baby snakes in it. The stencil effect of snakeskin was especially neat.

If you are a fan, I guess you'll be checking this out every week for the next couple of months!

Have never watched any of it..strangely enough I am not a fan of any cooking show. LOL
That birthday cake is a masterpiece.

I love GBBO and I'm hoping to attempt each of the technical challenges for this season in the lead up to the finale. I've noticed quite a few people posting their version of the technical on Instagram this week. The recipe looked easy enough but the equipment is tricky. Combo parchment/foil used to portion a large cake pan into 3?!
