Magee Marsh 2023

Spring mmigration at Magee Marsh on the shore of Lake Erie east of Toledo is a remarkable birding magnet. Large numbers of bird species migrate through this small wetland preserve each May, attracting birders from many parts of the country. We usually spend at least one day enjoying the beautiful woods and fantastic birds at the marsh (and I have posted about many of these birding trips). Beautiful weather made this year’s birding day even more special.

My Prettiest Birds

Red-Headed Woodpecker

Wood Duck

An eagle, not far from the nest.

Two eaglets in the nest.

Rose-Breasted Grossbeak

Scarlet Tanager

Screech Owl

Nesting Yellow Warbler

Another Yellow Warbler. Well over 30 species of warblers are commonly seen at Magee Marsh.

Baltimore Oriole

For detailed information on visiting Magee Marsh, and about the annual birding festival held there, see “Birding Magee Marsh,” the official website of the wildlife area.

Birders in their native habitat

Amish and Mennonite communities in Ohio have many active birders.
We saw this group of young men several times as we walked the boardwalk and the trails.
For information about Amish/Mennonite birders and their continuation of phone hotlines no longer
needed by the rest of the birding community, see this: “Where have all the rare bird alerts gone?

"Birders in their native habitat" sure made me laugh!
We don´t have such birds here in the city...

Hello Mae :=)
They are fabulous sightings, photos, and beautiful birds. The pretty nesting Yellow warbler is a lovely shot. The nest looks so soft and cosy. The stunning combo of orange and black plumage of the Baltamore Grossbeak is gorgeous, as is the Rose-breasted Grossbeak's red black and grey plumage. The Owl and WWoodpecker were great sightings. To me it would seem impossible to photograph any birds with he multitude of birders milling around for surely the birds would either fly away or stay hidden. Well done Mae for capturing so many fantastic birds.
All the best.

Great sightings, the eagles are returning to our area after many years of absence, lovely to see them gliding across the sky.

Wow what gorgeous bird photos. Did you really see an owl?! The Red headed woodpecker is neat looking. We get bald eagles here ... majestic.

this is absolutely amazing...i hope you can feel my excitement!! i have never seen a wood duck in a tree, it looks so interesting from that vantage point!! the image of the nesting yellow warbler is fantastic, talk about perfect timing, it is just so beautiful!! the oriole brought back sweet memories. i had one once, in my yard, at my feeders. it stayed all winter and we took very good care of it. it would watch us put food out for it...then swoop in when we were barely gone. then one day, it was gone!!

it's so nice to see young people interested in birds...

the eagles always steal the show!!
