A Beautiful Museum: Mauritshuis in the Hague.

Our tour features birding and art. We spent the afternoon at the Mauritshuis, an extraordinary museum.

Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring is probably the most famous painting in the museum.

Still Life by Clara Peeters (active 1611-1612)

The building dates from the seventeenth century. It was the home of Count Johan Maurits.
His fortune came from the 20 year Dutch colonization in Brazil, of which he was Governor-General.
The museum has a painful and interesting exploration of slavery and exploitation under his rule there.

Rembrandt: The Anatomy Lesson

We enjoyed an excellent guided tour. This is our guide, who offered much to think about.
We also had time to explore on our own, and to see a special exhibit of work from the Frick Museum in New York.
This exhibit brought the total number of Rembrandts on display to 13.

What a fabulous museum to start your trip. How wonderful to see such a famous Vermeer and 13 great Rembrandt paintings together. I for one, would have been in fine art heaven.

That's a fabulous exhibit. I wonder if some of these are on loan from Rijksmuseum. I've seen them in person before but not at the Hague!

Very recognisable the girl with the pearl earring, nice to see it in person. Still looking after sick kitties, so I'm very late to the party. Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx
