Street Art in Iceland

Iceland seemed to be full of unexpected art works, in the cities and even in the countryside. Many of these photos were taken from the bus windows, as we toured a variety of places. As a result, I don’t really know anything about the works or about their artists.

In the harbor of Reykjavik— the midnight sun appears in the circle at the summer solstice.

At the airport.

Monument to Hans Jonathan (1784-1827). He was born in the Danish island of St. Croix to an enslaved mother; his father was probably European. With his mother, Jonathan moved to Denmark; he eventually moved to Iceland. He lived as a free man in the small town of Djúpivogur, where we saw this monument. Recent DNA studies have shown that he has many descendants among the current Icelandic population.

Mae - I so enjoyed reliving our trip through your blog! You not only captured the scenic essence of our adventure, but also the extraordinary in the ordinary - art, food, people. Great photography and great writing! Thanks so much for sharing all this. It was a pleasure traveling with you and Len, and I hope our paths cross again! Best regards, Sherry Grossman

It's fun seeing all your photos in this and your next post. Most of these views are different from things I saw, but similar in many ways. Have a nice next trip.

Some of these are stunning, others look like graffiti art. I absolutely LOVE the sculptures, though.
