At a Coney Island Diner in Ann Arbor

Mural on the wall of Uptown Coney Island in Ann Arbor. This is definitely retro art as the diner was founded in 1990,
and the images are obviously meant to be from the 1960s. Some reviews mention the mural but don't name the artist.
In case you don't know this: Coney Islands are a special type of Greek restaurant, mainly in Michigan and a few other places. Some of the Coney Islands are chains, but Uptown Coney Island has only two restaurants: one in Ann Arbor, one in Chelsea. The central offering of all Coney Islands is the Coney Island Hot Dog on a bun with chili, onion, and yellow mustard.

I ate breakfast at Uptown Coney Island recently because it's next door to the car dealer where my car was being serviced.  I only had some cinnamon toast (good!), but the menu has all the classic diner favorites -- tuna melts, burgers, gyros, waffles, meatloaf, and every kind of egg for breakfast. I would like to try their Monte Christo sandwich some time. Also the corned beef hash. The hot dog? Not for me, thanks.

A good hot dog can be a fun summer treat.

A sweet mural on that wall. Sometimes I'm totally in the mood for a good hot dog.

A nice old-world mural. Thanks for participating Mae.
Not a great fan of hot dogs either, but would have eggs and bacon for sure!

I've never thought of a Coney Island as a Greek restaurant. The one in our town is more like a diner -- hot dogs, coney dogs, great breakfasts. But not a mecca for Greek food! Love the mural.

My Dad would have loved that mural and my husband loves a good diner.

Jeanie -- The Coney Islands in Ann Arbor are all owned by Greek immigrants or their descendants, and they usually have a few Greek standards like Gyros, baklava, or Greek salad. The original ones in Detroit and Jackson were founded by Greek immigrants over a century ago. Everything I thought I knew was supported and expanded by the Wikipedia article!

Was I glad to finally read the word "gyros" :-)
What has a Hot Dog to do in a Greek restaurant? Help So "un-German"!
A cinnamon toast we call "Poor Knight" btw.
What is a Monte Christo sandwich, I wonder.
The mural reminds me of Cuba, hmmm, they have good food, too!

Nice mural, and interesting to read about these diners. I've never heard of them, but will try them out if ever in that part of the US

Love the mural at the Coney Island restaurant. While I wouldn't have a hot dog in the morning, I'd definitely have one if I visited at lunch time.

I actually did not know that Greek Coney Islands were a thing but that explains some of the food choices at a few of our old-time Coney Islands here. :)

J'aime beaucoup l'atmosphère fraîche et naïve de cette fresque. Et son aspect joyeusement coloré. Merci beaucoup
