Our return from Costa Rica was one week ago today. In the week since then I’ve been catching up on documenting this wonderful birding trip. I’ve enjoyed thinking about all the spectacular and colorful birds we saw, such as the six species of owls depicted above. (Crested Owl, Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Black & White Owl, Spectacled Owl, Mottled Owl, and Tropical Screech Owl.) Now I think it’s time to move on and start writing about life back here in very dreary Ann Arbor where we have not yet seen a moment of sunshine!
A full-color photo of the view from our living room window yesterday afternoon. Guess what? I’m staying inside and reading books, which you’ll be hearing about. |

Wow, I love all your Costa Rica Owls. The Crested Owl and the Spectacled Owls are cool looking owls. Great sightings and wonderful photos. Take care, stay warm and have a happy weekend.
Such a contrast your wonderful Costa Rica wildlife and the snow scene at home. It looks magic from here so I hope you enjoy your reading and keep warm!

I have really enjoyed all of your photos and posts about Costa Rica. And you photo from your front porch looks like a beautiful postcard. I would be looking through a window with a book in hand also.
I think you got more than we did but I'm staying inside too. Books -- aren't they extra wonderful in winter?
Love the bird pictures and the snow! Stay warm and happy reading!
The snow looks so nice to someone from my area, where it rarely snows! But it's definitely stay-inside-and-read weather. Hope you enjoy the reading!
That's a pretty snow, but what a difference from Costa Rica!
We have similar views outside our windows today, and reading inside sounds perfect. I love your owl photos from Costa Rica!
Who even knew there were owls, and so many owls, in Costa Rica? Those owls are incredible.
And now you are back to the cold. I don't even want to tell you that I walked on the beach in Galveston Thursday, 75 degrees, sunny, barefooted.
You created some beautiful memories and I thank you for sharing them with us. Have a nice evening and stay warm.
Any trip with six owl species is a great trip. We have both done it. Shall we start a club?
I can imagine that there is a huge difference between sunny Costa Rica and cold, grey Ann Arbor. We have the same colour scheme here, shades of grey. Not even the birds have shown themselves. The owl photos you shared are beautiful. And I always love the images from David Zinn! Have a good Sunday, Valerie
Such beautiful pictures of the owls you saw. Enjoy your books!
@David: We actually saw one more owl, a barn owl, but didn't take a photo as it was skulking in a palm tree and we have seen this species many times. But the total for the trip was really 7 owls!
I love the owls, I've been learning a lot about birds and how their necks are stiff so that they can navigate the sky better. It's fascinating.
Loved Costa Rica!!
No sunshine here either!
It looks like a winter wonderland out your window. Staying inside and reading is a good plan. Can't wait to hear what you've read. Stay warm!!
Oh wow, from sunny Costa Rica to white Michigan, that must be rough.

I'm glad you had such a wonderful time in Costa Rica and got to see so many birds! I'm sorry Ann Arbor is so dreary. Let's hope this will be a short winter. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
So beautiful.

all those gorgeous birds! Your snowy photo looks wonderful. we are having a very hot and humid summer atm. More rain about to fall ...
Those owls are beautiful! I love birding. We had a similar view last winter here in Northern California, but this year we've been getting more rain. Enjoy your cozy reading weather!
I'm envious of all the kinds of Owls you saw. Wow! I once saw a regular pygmy owl in the woods in winter. It was up high in a tree on the ski slopes and everyone was gaping at it, which I did as well. So small and interesting looking. I felt so lucky that day! It's possible that I will never get that chance again. but I hope so.
