May, 2025: Food in Ann Arbor
May has been a very busy month. We traveled to Virginia for Alice's graduation, and we began our back-yard cooking season in Michigan. For
Sherry's In My Kitchen this month, I've divided my post into two parts: Virginia and Michigan; yesterday’s post was about Virginia. Before and after our Virginia trip, we cooked a variety of foods in our kitchen, and after a lot of rain, were able to cook on the grill in our back yard.
Finally: Outdoor Cooking and Eating
In my kitchen and dining room…

I love this new dragon cup made by Evelyn. The dragon wraps around the cup, so I showed two sides of it. |

Here’s one clear and believable summary of the current childhood nutrition situation, as expert food scientist
Marion Nestle explained it:
“Most American children’s diets are dominated by ultra–processed foods (UPFs) high in added sugars, chemical additives, and saturated fats, while lacking sufficient intakes of fruits and vegetables.”
The “Make America Healthy” report on childhood nutrition was released this month. While the problems in our society with feeding children a healthy diet seem to be pretty well formulated, the solutions seem questionable and more details of the dishonesty of the study have been revealed each day.
Here’s a quote from the press release about this new publication:
“We will end the childhood chronic disease crisis by attacking its root causes head-on—not just managing its symptoms,” said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “We will follow the truth wherever it leads, uphold rigorous science, and drive bold policies that put the health, development, and future of every child first. I’m grateful to President Trump for his leadership—and for trusting me to lead this fight to root out corruption, restore scientific integrity, and reclaim the health of our children.” (source)
New details keep emerging about this report. In particular, a news story on Thursday revealed that the report “contains citations to studies that do not exist.” (source) Several of the authors whose works were “cited” stated that the supposed articles and fictitious coauthors. Further reports on Friday revealed that the study is based on unreliable AI generation. Bottom line from an expert:
“This is not an evidence-based report, and for all practical purposes, it should be junked at this point….It cannot be used for any policymaking. It cannot even be used for any serious discussion, because you can’t believe what’s in it.” (quote from Georges C. Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association)
I’m not just skeptical about this bogus study, which the Trump administration is nevertheless supporting. I’m terrified by the meaning and implications, in the first quote, of “truth,” “corruption,” and “scientific integrity.” The administration has undermined existing programs and sabotaged public trust in the food supply. Kennedy's crackpot science ideas are already doing quite a lot of harm in agriculture, medicine, and climate science. Layoffs of food regulators, perversion of regulations, and defunding of agriculture and welfare programs (details here) undermine the well-being and health of all citizens.
I started writing this on Tuesday, and new revelations each day have caused me to revise what I’ve said. You really can’t trust this government!

I want to eat at your house Mae. :) And that health report just goes to show that Kennedy knows nothing about health except some foolish theories that have no scientific proof. Happy last day of May and start to June.
You are definitely eating well at Chez Sander and beyond. Everything looks wonderful. We've not cooked out yet at all, though I think this weekend we shall, with better weather. I think I'll get Rick a grill basket for veggies for Father's Day. And by the way LOVING that you cook on charcoal. From where I sit, the only way to go!
Hello Mae,
All the food images look delicious. I love grilled veggies.
The salads, tuna and salmon all look delicious.
Take care, have a wonderful weekend.
All the food looks really delicious. I love cooking outside but haven't yet because of the rain and wind. Have a great weekend and enjoy the food.
Outdoor eating is just the best! There's something about the fresh air that makes all the food more delicious. I too am really concerned about children's diets in this modern age.. it seems like UPFs are everywhere and so hard to avoid. France seems to be better than Australia on that front, but still plenty of UPFs here...

All that food looks delicious but please allow me to make my plate and then go eat by myself in the kitchen cuz I will scream and run at the first sighting of a bee or any other outdoor flying bug.
Your last statement is so telling. It's hard to follow any one story because the lies and incompetence show up immediately and continue over time. And there are so many stories to follow that have that same problem!
Everything looks delicious, but the taco salad really speaks to me. :)
'Tis the graduation season! I hope you enjoyed your travels--and look at all that delicious food!
Every day some new lies are told. I have no trust in the current administration and their propaganda.
I have a good week, Mae. Take care!
The variety you enjoy is wonderful, do you by chance have a CSA that dictates some of your dishes based upon harvest? All dishes share are lovely, but I have to admit, the capers and pork really caught my eye. I think it is time to get a bottle of capers!
All your food photos look yummy!
Love all the natural food selections -- all look so delicious. The gov't is dreadful and is really taking the country in dangerous directions in so many ways.
Ooh yum. We still haven't cooked food outside yet.. the weather has been two dicey.. sun one minute and rain another.
So much deliciousness in one place!
We have started with soups and casseroles at our place!
The attacks on science from the current admin in the US are just horrifying. Not that Britain always does a great job, but... oooof. It's such a mess.
Love your food pics!
I love your dragon cup! Any time I read Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. name I want to cringe. He is living in cloud cuckoo land, as the saying goes. So far, the only good thing to come out of his mouth is an end to E numbers in food - but can you believe that for real, knowing how many untruths he has said?
Your food looks wonderful -- I like how you mix what we used to call square meals (protein, starch, veg) or plate meals with what we eat more of these days -- salad meals, bowls, that kind of thing. That said, that tuna steak plate would be my first choice if I had only one and I would joyfully eat every single one you show.
Part Two of your post is frightening as is pretty much everything that comes from Jr. and his leader. And as well a scary reminder that corrupt people not only have our highest offices but also easy access to AI which makes it even easier for them to lie to us.
That food looks so great - I especially like the picture of goodies on the grill, or steak and wine! Pondering the government's decisions and actions lately is depressing, and never has an actual logical conclusion...
that Kennedy bloke is just so evil i can't believe it! But i do love your dragon mug, and all the great food here. Thanks again for joining in this month.
cheers
sherry
Some excellent meals in your kitchen, the dragon mug is special.

Lovely to see all your spring food. That israeli salad with the falafels looks so good (and reminds me of the great salads when I volunteered on a kibbutz). I am curious about what you put in your stuffed mushrooms, having had a go at some stuffed mushrooms last month. Your backyard looks lovely in the dappled light with all the greenery! And that mug is gorgeous - Evelyn is very creative.
I read with horror of the report on childhood nutrition - such disturbing propaganda to see while food supply is being reduced, food programs are not being supported and science is being ridiculed. So much work has gone into building the infrastructure and expertise to run these programs. I fear it will not be easy to return to what has been lost.
I can't believe how long it's been since I visited. Lots of catching up to do. I want to eat like you, even if only for a week. I always leave hungry when I visit your food days.
Now we have even more measles outbreaks. Kennedy is bad for this country.
