This book seems more like a reference work than a readable history. I read only parts of it. The author has written better books! |
High Island Blues is set in the exact locations where we were birding in Texas in April. |
This book was a gift from Deb at Readerbuzz, which was wonderful of her!
Not only the setting, but the activity of birding and the goals of the characters in High Island Blues are very much like the goals of the birders that we traveled with. Obviously, the major difference is that no one on our tour —that I know of — was motivated to murder anyone. The birding sites named in the novel are the same ones we visited. Two characters in the novel at one point go into Houston to have lunch at the Galleria Shopping Center, which was the location of our hotel at after the tour. As the characters drive through Houston and around the birding areas, I could picture just these places where we drove on our tour.
At one point, we saw an old motel in Winnie, Texas, near the birding sites. This motel was mentioned by name in the novel. We were told that our tour company used to have people stay there, but it has declined in quality. We stayed in a much newer hotel, happily.
The characters in the novel in fact stayed at an old house with a colorful landlady, which I suspect was entirely fictitious, and which enabled the author to create a conventional plot of the English Country House genre, but of course set in Texas. A very successful artistic decision!
As mysteries go, this is a great read. The author has written many successful books, some of which are also TV shows. I’ve loved the “Vera” TV series based on another series of books by the author, Ann Cleeves.
High Island — site of the action in the novel. Our birding trip to Texas in April visited there, and the experience was just like the description in the book, despite the gap of 30 years. |

A Swainson’s Warbler that we saw in Texas when birding in the sites noted in the novel. Just before finding the body, the key witness was searching for this bird. (Len’s Photo) |
What’s on TV?

I am off to order the Ann Cleeves! Sounds just what I need to get back into reading. I haven't cracked a book in a month! Too busy in the garden.
I've only read one Ann Cleaves novel and I enjoyed it. I absolutely loved the Vera series based on her books. How fun that you knew the places of High Island Blues.
Hello Mae,
I am not sure I read this Ann Cleeves book, I will check it out.
I have always wanted to do some birding in Texas. Take care, have a great day!
What a pretty warbler. I'm glad you mentioned Elsbeth; I've watched a few of the shows and loved them. I have to catch up again.
I always love your book synopses. It seems the one by Ann Cleeves hit close to home. I have never read any Vera books, but I saw a few TV shows while they were on PBS.
Since I cut the cable cord, I haven't seen any Elsbeth shows. BTW, I read in NYT this morning where NPR is suing tRump over his defunding efforts.
I didn't know Ann Cleeves had a new book set in Texas. or maybe it isn't new. I enjoy Ann Cleeves mysteries, and this one looks like a good read, and different from the Shetland or English ones.
Swainson’s Warbler is the only regularly occurring warbler north of the Mexican border to have eluded me! I doubt very much that I will ever again be in an area where it appears so it is probably going to remain that way.
I love Ann Cleeves (as you know) and have only read one George and Molly book but I'll look for this one in the future. Interesting, setting them in Texas. That's a switch for her. I do love a book (or movie) that visits places I know. It really helps "set" things.
I'm really glad that you enjoyed the book set in the spot you just visited and that you found the book descriptions to be true to the actual place. I'm also glad there was no murdering while you were visiting.
I'm trying so hard to get better at identifying different birds. It's hard! TikTok has been surprisingly helpful.
I think I would enjoy the first book a lot. So nice to get a book for a gift. I also like "Vera" Enjoy the books
I hope for reading time once studies are done.
Atm I only in breaks read "The Simpsons and their mathematical secrets"...
I really like Ann Cleeves!
Hello Mae,
Love the Swainson's Thrush, great photo.
I am looking for the High island Blues book.
Thanks for the reviews.
Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.
Sorry, I typed Swainson's Thrush it should be Warbler.
BTW, it is a great sighting.
I also read Ann Cleeves' book and thought it was very good!
The Cleeves book sounds very enjoyable with those same bird locations. I hope you thought her writing about birding was spot on. I look forward to her books.
Shame that Invitation to a Banquet wasn't better. The cover is lovely and it sounds like it should be interesting!
