A Little Magnet History

My magnet collection, which contains quite a few of them, hasn’t changed much lately, but Evelyn visited Arches National Park in June, and brought me the Arches magnet. The second new magnet — which I bought at a local shop — depicts the “Big Tire,” which is a famous Detroit landmark on Highway 94 between Ann Arbor and Detroit. 

The photo from a car window, taken a couple of years ago, shows the actual Big Tire as we were driving past it. The structure inside the “tire” was originally a ferris wheel built for the New York World’s Fair in 1964. The tire company purchased the ferris wheel in 1966 at the end of the fair. They moved it to its current location beside the freeway where it was repurposed as a record-setting outdoor advertisement. 

It makes a good magnet!

What We’ve Been Eating

Round things in my kitchen

In my kitchen this month I have many round and spherical things, and I don’t mean just round plates! Here are photos to share with the once-a-month link-up sponsored by Sherry at the blog Sherry’s Pickings, We cooked lots of good things for ourselves this month, and for our guests during the last week in June. Also, they cooked many good things for us. However, I decided to write and photograph something different for this month’s wrap-up.

A highlight of June has been a visit from several relatives. Yesterday, to wrap up, we had ice cream at Argus cafe with Alice and Miriam. All our visitors have now left Ann Arbor.

Kitchen Scenes

Here, in no particular order, are some of the photos I took when touring two Great Houses along our route in the British Isles last week. The families who own these houses, which also have beautiful formal and less formal gardens, lived there until fairly recently, so the kitchens combine historic display items with slightly older equipment for preparing grand dinners and family meals. Some of these photos were in a post I did last week, but I wanted to include them again.

I’m writing this while watching a version of a Jane Austen novel on TV — I suspect that these kitchens would have been quite similar to the ones in the houses she wrote about, though the characters in the novels weren’t generally in any kitchens. They are definitely similar to the ones in many TV series about the British upper classes and their servants!

This meat grinder, which has a clamp for attaching to a table, is very much like the one I had until recently.
