January Cooking

January 2023 began with a lovely dinner

Since the year began, my kitchen has been the site of  lots of cooking including experiments with new recipes and new ingredients. I’ve posted photos about some of this food before, so you may have seen some of the pictures earlier this month, but I’ve added some new ones too.. I’ll be sharing this post  on Sherry’s blog to participate in the once-a-month blog event “In My Kitchen.”

New Cookies from Costco

Stroopwafels from Holland via Costco. Nice!


Trying many new Asian recipes



Kitchen prep: sauce ingredients for the dandan noodles.

Minced pork for the dandan noodles.

Bok choi with ginger, cucumber salad with peanuts, and dandan noodles with pork and spicy sauce.
Len continues his successful experiments with Asian recipes.

Another dinner: bao buns filled with mushrooms, carrot pickles, wild-caught shrimp, and snow peas.


Chicken stew, fish-fragrant eggplant, and smashed cucumbers.
Smashing the cukes is fun, says Len.

Mapo tofu with rice and salad.


Inspired by Judee’s Posts about Quinoa


Judee at the blog Gluten Free A to Z had some nice quinoa
recipes, which inspired me to try some new salads with this ingredient.

And other dishes…

Old favorite: vegetarian chili and salad with avocados.

Tortilla with carnitas, cheese, cilantro. Cooked by Evelyn,
Tom, Miriam, and Alice in our kitchen.

Campari tomatoes are my favorite Costco purchase.
The tortilla filling was a total impulse buy, and a good one.

Tortilla and red bean casserole, plus clementines:
a very simple lunch.

On repeat: mixed salad.

Julia Child’s recipes are always a treat, and worth the effort.
I made this steak au poivre for our visitors.

Coffee Every Day …

New mug from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.
Old mug from Madera Canyon, Arizona.

We drink French Press coffee in the kitchen every morning.
But as in this photo, sometimes we have an espresso at a cafe.
This one came with a glass of bubbly water!

You have lots of good food in your house for certain Mae. And don't you love those La Grande Galette cookies? I get them at Costco when I see them too. Happy T day. Hope it's not too cold. hugs-Erika

I could eat every one of those deviled eggs. Seriously. Those Stroopwafels are making the rounds since Carola first shared hers. I'll take a French butter cookie.

Kate makes her own Kimchi, if I am correct and she uses it to aid her stomach problems. I'll join you for bao buns, mushrooms, snow peas, and shrimp. Eggplant and smashed cukes sound good, too. So does tofu and rice. Quinoa mixed with ANYTHING is great. I also love vegetarian chili and salad. Red bean casserole sounds good, too. I'll let you eat the steak, though.

I'm not a fan of French Press. It's OK if I don't have to clean the grounds. Your new mug is beautiful. I like the old one, too! Thamks fr sharing your plethora of food that has my mouth watering, your new mug, and your espreso with bubbly water with us for T this Tuesday, dear Mae.

What gorgeous looking food! Gorgeous styling, too. Not sure how you got that shot of the chicken stew/eggplant/etc., but hope you were careful on whatever ladder you had to climb to get it...

I get an email newsletter on Japanese cooking but never have nearly all the required ingredients. I'm hesitant to buy that many ingredients to try a few recipes, but your post tempts me :)

You are really inspiring me here. I have seen those Stroopwaffels, but never tried them. I’m intrigued by those La Grande Galette cookies. I haven’t seen those around anywhere. I let my Sam’s membership lapse when I lost my husband six years ago, and have never had a membership to Costco, but now I’m wondering about that. Probably not the best investment just to get cookies, but I know Costco has a lot of yummy things. I enjoyed this post. Thanks.

I am eyeing up all the veggie foods, they look great, as do the stroopwafels, not had one for ages. I did actually have quinoa tonight for dinner. I've not liked it much in the past but this recipe was a good one so I might be eating more of it in the future. Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx

All the food looks great. DH makes Kimchi and it is quite good, I haee never tried smashing cucumbers in order to eat them. There is always something new to try.

Lots of fabulous dishes in your kitchen Mae. Yes we like a bit of quinoa too. We only started eating it regularly in recent years. Those Aztecs/Mayans knew a thing or two. Have a good month. I'm hoping ours is better than January! And i hope it cools down. Soooo hot and humid lately. I got rid of two sham posts on the linky this morning. Grrrrrr ...

I always get so hungry looking at your blog -- and I always feel like such a slacker! It may (or may not) be a good thing I didn't see the stroopwaffles at my last Costco visit. Now I must go back sooner than planned. I had my first one at the DIA Van Gogh exhibit and fell in love!

Mae, this was such a food and fun adventure. My go-to site nowadays is the NYT Cooking and truly your food photos rival theirs in excellence. I just saved a quinoa salad recipe to my recipe box since I found a jar of it in our pantry and wasn't sure what to do with it. (Our food adventures are a little on the mild side compared to yours, but we're trying!)

Everything look so delicious!

We do love a stroopwafel in our house. We didn't eat as many as I thought we might when we were in the Netherlands! I was hoping to try the ones that are put together fresh and warm at street food vans but it didn't happen!

Everything looks delicious and I'm making notes of your Costco buys. The Hubs got a DYI Dan-Dan noodle kit for the holidays. I can't wait for him to make it for us. (It's an easy version but with homemade chile crisp.)

Your steak au poivre has my mouth watering. We only eat steak once or twice a week so it must be good. I enjoyed reading about all of your Asian dishes as well. Great post with lots of delicious food thanks so much.x
