| We started the day at a series of birding sites, where we saw many beautiful and new birds. |
In 1628, the ship Batavia was built for the Dutch East India Company. As the company's new flagship, she sailed that year on her maiden voyage, but was wrecked on a small chain of islands off the coast of Australia. The aftermath of the shipwreck was a massacre and mistreatment of the 300 survivors — one of the worst shipwreck stories in history. The replica was made a few years ago, and now serves as a dockside museum in the harbor of Lelystad where we ate lunch.

We have checked into our hotel on the island, have eaten a very nice dinner, and will be birding on the island all day tomorrow. While today’s weather was extremely beautiful and not too cold, we are now near the North Sea and further north, so we expect a cold day of outdoor activity.

I have long been fascinated by the Batavia. Everytime I go back to Perth I make it a point to go to the Maritime Museum to see what is left of the hull which has been preserved.
I am currently reading a book called The Night Ship which is about the wreck.
We will be in the Netherlands in a couple of weeks! I am very much looking forward to it.
