A Birthday

This is a photo of my mother when she was in her twenties, long before she met my father. She loved to sketch, and her friends all expected her to be making little sketches when they went out together. In this photo, she’s on a Mississippi River excursion boat called “The Admiral,” which started its day trips on the riverfront in St.Louis and cruised to the south along the river for a few hours.

Maybe she was sketching the Missouri and Illinois bluffs and farmlands that were visible from the deck, or maybe she was sketching little portraits of her friends. I imagine that she gave her sketches to them.

Today, October 10, 2020, would be her 110th birthday, so I’m thinking about her and the things she enjoyed during her life — friends, her family, and sketching, painting, drawing, and calligraphy.

This photo is such a treasure. I love photos that show people doing what they love to do, not just smiling at the camera. I like those, too. But these tell of a life, a passion. They are the types of photo that add richness to the family story. 110. Wow. Doesn't that amaze you a bit? It does me.

We have been going through all the photos at Mom's and have found photos we have never seen before.

Your mother was beautiful. What a way to pay homage to her. Such a lovely photo and one you can be proud that you have of her. It's amazing all the things she 3was capable of doing. I wonder if you have any of her paintings.
