Almost French Food

Breakfast on our patio: bread and jam is a typical
breakfast in French homes where we have stayed
with friends. Orange juice: not so much.
Of course there's always coffee.

Preparing a snack for distanced dining: a Provençal onion tart called a
Pissaladière, referring to salted fish. We substituted smoked salmon for the
traditional anchovies.

Ready for another distanced visit.
Two tables, chairs more than 6' apart.

French pommes à l'huile: potato salad with
oil and herbs. I garnished it with roasted red pepper.
That may not be a French thing to do.
The vegetarian Beyond Burgers and the ketchup
are pretty much 100% American!

A salad of French green lentils, red onion, celery, dried tomato, and cilantro
with lemon vinaigrette. The lentils are French, but I'm not sure about the rest.

We are long-term lovers of French food, and even though we are currently avoiding beef and pork, we continue to enjoy some French-style meals -- or at least some French-style dishes within American meals. One of these days we'll order some local lamb or beef direct from farmers, not from monster slaughter houses where workers are mistreated.

Love that onion tart! Not a fan of beyond burger or any faked meat. These days fake meat, fake cheese everywhere..

The onion tart looks great. This is how I love potato salad too -- no mayo but vinaigrette instead (holds up better outside on hot days, too!)Your cooking looks fabulous and I would love to sample it all!

Rick made hot dog/brat buns yesterday. In terms of being buns, he thought they were an epic fail because they didn't rise right -- they did, then collapsed flat in the oven. But boy, were they good and tasty. As tasty as any bread he's ever made, even more so! They worked fine, just looked weird, but they were also fabulous toast and breakfast bread (with jam, of course!)

Thanks for sharing all these delicious looking dishes. I think I would like the lentil dish-is that served cold? we recently moved and not too far us is an amish community so am hoping their is a local butcher there.

Hi Mae, your onion tart looks tasty but I’m not a lover of lentils in salads although it looks very colourful. ,i do love potatoe salad Especially the way it is made in Germany, I like the look of your bread , I could eat that with just butter, or with jam.

I got hungry when I came to visit today. I would love to try the onion tart, but I am one of those rare persons who loves anchovies.

That lentil salad looks wonderful. Did you dry your own tomatoes? I have dried mine in the past. That's why I bought a Roma plant this year. I'm not sure, but cilantro is mediterranean, so it could well have migrated to France.

I take it that was ice water on the table. And of course, I saw the French Press and the orange juice, too. Thanks for sharing these wonderful meals and drinks with us for T this Tuesday, Mae.

Yumm, my mouth is watering! Your breakfast looks real nice. I love bread like that, with butter and jam. We have it too when I bake my own bread. We don't usually have orange juice, that seems to be typical American (we live in Spain).
The pissaladière looks yummy. I don't mind anchovis actually, as long as it is not too overpowering.
I will pass on the fake burgers. Not for me, but the potato salad looks inviting. I had never thought of adding some peppers. It makes it look much nicer.
Lentil salad is great. It's a shame I find it difficult to source those tiny French puy lentils. They are always super in a salad.
You've made me hungry now. Luckily it is nearkly dinner time (we eat our main meal at 3 in the afternoon). I'm making andives with ham and cheese in the oven.

All your food looks wonderful... we ate cream cheese and smoked salmon on English muffins this morning because no bagels...was good but certainly not as elegant as your tart...(.I’m kind of into no-cook breakfasts.). We’re also eating way less meat for the same reasons you give. When we do buy beef (rarely) it is only from a local farm store source.

I'm thankful I just ate otherwise my tummy would be growling. That lentil salad looked really good. I have one saved on Pinterest that I really want to try that looks very similar.

Well I don't know where to start. Oh yeah...adopt us! Every single thing on your table looks amazing, fresh and heathly. I have not tried the Beyond Burgers yet but I plan to next shopping trip. We are going through the meats we have in the fridge and freezer and planning how to restock. More chicken products and very little beef upcoming, if any.
After my last bout with diverticulitis I'm making big changes in the diet.

The lentil salad is certianly going in my notebook of things to try upcoming. WE also love sitting outside to eat and were fortunate for a bit. Now it's getting very humid but how nice to sit and eatch the birds while we sip coffee and have breakfast or lunch.

I would love everything you made for this " meatless" dinner. The onion tart, lentil salad, and potatoes all look absolutely delicious! We had our older son and his family for dinner last night on our deck 6 ft apart as well and separate appetizers and separate serving dishes for the main meal.

It all looks wonderful. We saw Pissaladière everywhere when we went to Alsace-Lorraine, but my favorite food was in Provence, especially the pan bagnat. Do you think we will ever get to travel again like before? Maybe not before I am too old, I'm guessing! Fortunately I have many recipes to make a pan bagnat, but it doesn't compare to sitting on the French Riviera eating it!

You have such a lovely backyard! I would love to sit and have my breakfast and coffee outside, but it's never quite warm enough in the morning since we have so much shade. Butter & jam for breakfast sounds wonderful, as I usually just have Greek yogurt and berries.
