Food in Virginia in May
This is the first of two posts about food and kitchens in May, 2025. We had such a busy month that I had to break my usual wrap-up post into two parts: tomorrow will be a post about Ann Arbor kitchens and dining. During our trip to Fairfax and Charlottesville to attend Alice’s college graduation, we ate many good things. Here are a few examples.
 |
Restaurant food: a steak at our graduation celebration in Charlottesville. |
 |
Brunch at a favorite Cuban diner: huevos ranchros. |
 |
Back in Fairfax: dinner at Evelyn’s. Salad, quinoa, bread… |
 |
… and the main course: trout. |
 |
Evelyn’s fried Gabriella brought us Armenian apricot leather. |
 |
Tom’s crab cakes in the refrigerator! |
Bonus: Murals

All the food looks yummy, I love crabcakes.
Nice collection of murals.
Take care, enjoy your day!
I kinda zoomed in on the cheese tray! Yum!
So much good food but that apricot leather is AMAZING! How did they make it so enormous, I'm imagining a giant press... my mouth is watering just thinking about the delicious apricot flavour..

Everything looks yummy. That apricot leather though...I've never seen anything like it.
Good artworks.
It all looked wonderful, especially that steak, cooked just right! I have never seen a sheet of fruit leather like that Apricot leather. Very nice recap.
Great murals- love the face peeking out the window best! #MuralMonday
The food looks delicious and the murals beautiful!
Good food I guess and I like the red mural
The food looks great. Apricot leather, delicious. You found some great murals. My favourite is the second one. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Mae.
Look at all that delicious food! You have had a very moreish May. That Cuban breakfast situation looks so delicious :)
I have to agree with everyone - that amazing fruit leather! I love a good mural too; and so much good food here in your photos. We don't usually eat red meat but every so often a steak would go down well... Thanks for sharing your fun May month, Mae.
That food looks really beautiful - the cheese platter and the meal at evelyn's look so lovely for celebrating and sharing. I can't get my head around the amazing apricot leather - it sounds like it is edible - do you just nibble around the edges til it is gone - I could imagine it wrapped around a dessert or even a savoury dish.
And I forgot to add how much fun all the street art is - especially the pink bird (flamingo?)
In response to comments about the fruit leather: here is a brief description and history of this Armenian specialty:

That apricot leather is beautiful. An apron? You had me on the chili rellenos, a favorite. Your travels look like they were a lot of fun.

What interesting travels you have had Mae, and the Cuban food looks delicious. The murals look great, we are big on murals here too, and yes the apricot leather is fascinating.
