Taking off from Greenland

After more than a week on the ship touring first Iceland and then Greenland , we are at the airport in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, waiting for the plane to Iceland and then (tomorrow) the plane back to the US. As far as we have heard, there are no flights from Greenland other than to Iceland and Denmark, so we have to go back to Iceland to get home: a pretty long and tiring journey.

Kangerlussuaq is quite a bit north of the Arctic Circle, and was originally developed as an American military base. It was active from 1941 until 1992, and now belongs to Greenland which makes use of the runways for a very far north airport. There are still American planes here that take care of some scientific bases on the Greenland Ice Cap.

We had a lovely tour of the tundra here, and we saw both a Musk Ox and a Reindeer. In addition to seeing the animals in the wild, at lunch we tried musk ox meat and reindeer sausage. Coming some time: my post on the interesting foods we've eaten and heard about on our trip. Mostly not quite this exotic!

You do visit the most interesting places and see the most interesting things, Mae! This sounds like a special (if tiring, at least on the flight!) trip.

I look forward to reading about your food and drink choices while on this cruise.

From what I'm seeing on the news, your flight home may be long and tedious, but at least it hasn't been cancelled as so many have here in the states. Seems to be lack of staffing has caused flights from several major airports to cancel or postpone flights for more than a day. I look forward to seeing you get home, dear.

How cool to see musk ox and reindeer. They are on my list of animals I want to see in the wild. It is wet around the musk ox. Is that soggy tundra from melt or was it a wet area? hugs-Erika
