South Carolina Murals

Georgetown, South Carolina

Georgetown, South Carolina is a little town with a long history and quite a bit of industry. This mural is on the wall of the steel mill, which is on the waterfront facing the tourist shops and restaurants.

Downtown Georgetown has several blocks of picturesque old buildings in which there are restaurants, ice cream shops, old-fashioned department stores (that is, small!), and souvenir shops. Small museums in the town document the history of local maritime activities, rice culture, and the Gullah people who live in the area.

One block of shops, though, turns out to be a clever wall painted with murals. You may not realize at first that the “shop fronts” are painted on the wall except for one real door into the building and two real garbage cans! Here are some close-ups of the murals, taken in the bright sunshine —

Georgetown, founded in the 18th century, has a long history as an industrial port city in a heavily agricultural area. Activities have included growing and processing indigo, rice, and timber, and manufacturing steel. The steel plant and paper plant (processing timber) continue to operate. Obviously there's now also a well-developed tourist industry.

The area between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown has a number of small communities with beaches, parks, boardwalks, restaurants, shopping centers, neighborhoods of seaside houses and condos, and also housing inland from the beach. We find it very pleasant to visit here!

What a charming town! And that Georgetown mural might get my vote for most clever mural idea ever!

This is awesome all over! So cute!
Step out here, turn to the right, walk a few steps, you´ll likely see a dog watching out the window! He is white and follows you with his eyes.
Just like in the mural!
Oh, and the "fake" scenes, clever! Think I´d stood there for hours!
I´d really like to visit.
What else is there? I´ve never been to the US. But am keen to go. Tipps/hints/something?

They are all beautiful Mae, but my favourite would be the "fake shops", very clever mural indeed.
Thanks for contributing.
