Passover, 2025

Cooking for Passover, 1478

A full-scale Seder meal for Passover includes four cups of wine, hard-boiled eggs, matzos, matzoball soup, gefilte fish, roast chicken (or another roast), side dishes, and several desserts. This year we were alone, just the two of us, so we are having several simpler meals with only some of these favorite dishes.

Ritual foods: salt water, horseradish (bitter herbs), parsley (sweet herbs), charoset (apple mixture).
(Missing: a hard-boiled egg and a shank bone)

We ate the traditional soup on an earlier night.

The prophet Elijah travels throughout the world. When he is ready to announce the coming of Messiah, he will make himself visible and share the wine at the Seder. We pour some wine in hopes that he will show up.

We’ll have the traditional fish later this week.

I am fascinated by both your religion and customs. I enjoyed the food and various drinks, too. Thanks for explaining these customs to those of us like myself who are truly clueless.

Your table looks beautiful, Mae. I love the tablecloth and colors. (Are the colors traditional or just pretty?) The food looks interesting -- do you eat the horseradish as is or on the roast or otherwise? You chicken reminds me I haven't roasted one in a long while and it's about time I do! It all looks lovely.

Happy Passover. Gefilte fish is the worst thing ever inflicted on the human palate but a good friend assures me that it is only because I have never had it made by a bubby! She says she will only eat her bubby's.

I'm so glad you shared this with us for T this week, dear Mae. The horror that poor Josh Shapiro suffered during Seder was unjustified. Looks like the man how started the fire will get charged with the full extent of the law.

The horrifying attack on Governor Shapiro and his family actually took place at around 2 AM, some time after their Seder ended, according to the news. Very little is so far revealed about the assassination and arson attempts, but I suspect that antisemitism will be discovered as a motive. Very horrifying.

The Passover/Easter season was a time for horrible attacks on Jewish communities and families in historic times in Europe, times which we thought were in the past, and would never be a part of American life, but so much has been destroyed!

Hello Mae :)
Thank you for your lovely comment on my post for Saturday's Critters. I came over to wish you a Happy Passover. Everything looks beautifully prepared. The chicken looks roasted to perfection. Easter will be a family occasion here, and traditionally we eat roast goat.
All the best
Sonjia.

Thank you for sharing your Seder meal with us. I do not come from a Jewish family but I have celebrated the seder twice with friends. They explained everything as we went along. Very special indeed.
Happy T-Day,
