A Few Animals at the National Zoo

The pandas that are now at the National Zoo are on long-term loan from China,
but they are being recalled for political reasons.

We were especially anxious to see the pandas before they return to China later this year.

Next to pandas, the elephants are my favorites.


The largest creatures in the zoo.

The smallest creatures we saw were these mole rats.

A Gibbon.

Red Ruffed Lemurs.

Golden-Headed Lion Tamarin



Przewalski's Horses — the species is from Asia.  Its lineage split from domestic horses tens of thousands of years ago.

The famous meerkats are a delight to watch.

    I agree, I am not a fan of zoos. The pandas need such help, though. Great photos celebrating life.

    Love the zoos. Meercats are my favorite. Years ago John Cleese hosted a "Nature" doc on meercats. It was fascinating!

    I was lucky enough to see the pandas when I visited the National Zoo. It's so sad they will be leaving the U.S. for political reasons.

    If you ever make it to Kansas, I will take you to our zoo where the elephants roam in the third largest area in the states. We built an area that will rival many zoos. We got six to add to our one living African elephant, then added two more males to the mix later.

    Seeing animals reminds me of our own human-yet-animal nature. I am sad to hear that the pandas are being recalled because of political reasons.

    The National Zo is one of my favorite zoos to visit. Wonderful captures of all the critters. I will miss the Pandas, I am sorry they are being recalled.     I'm so glad you got to see the pandas at the National Zoo before they return to China. It's a bit sad that they're being recalled, but I'm sure it was a memorable experience.

    Isn't sad the pandas have to go back. They are fun to watch. I'd like to see the meerkats. I used to go the National Zoo a lot back when I lived in the area.
