Ten years ago this weekend we arrived in Santa Barbara for a month's stay -- a vivid memory. We went to lunch at a little burrito shop in a shopping center, and then bought some groceries for our temporary apartment. A weekly farmers' market was in the parking lot, which we really enjoyed -- especially the piles of ripe apricots. Here's what I wrote back then.
- You know you are in California when you are smiling at your burrito out in the sunshine.
- You know you are in California when a farmer at the farmers' market explains that he sells three types of artichokes, and another farmer has two kinds of avocados, some ripe, some hard. And a third farmer says that last year's tomato plants still have some tomatoes on them.
- You know you are in California when girls wear short shorts with Uggs. It's hardly worth mentioning the sight of surf boards, but they're here too.
- You know you are in California when you see flights of pelicans, sea fog, lagoons, tidal sloughs, and rolling waves.
- You know you are in California when you smell the eucalyptus trees.

California is a fun state. I like smiling at the burrito in the sunshine.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure what I was doing 10 years ago. Take care, enjoy your day!
CBS Sunday Morning did their show from Santa Barbara this morning and it looks wonderful. A month is a really nice time to spend somewhere.
ReplyDeleteNice memories from 10 years ago.

A month! Nice :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely memory Mae! Glad you can look back on it fondly.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week ahead!
Mae, we spent one winter season near San Diego (I know it's a different part of California and I think Santa Barbara is a heavenly place too, we've stayed there a couple of times) but what I wanted to tell you is that we went to a Farmer's Market twice a week -- different towns each time, sometimes we took a municipal bus to get there. We ate fresh food almost exclusively all Winter long -- it was wonderful. I loved reading your thoughts. I hope the drought will be over sometime soon or else I fear that our country's major food source will be drying up.
ReplyDeleteI am still digesting (no pun intended) your excellent post above on meat subs and am finding it very interesting. I've bookmarked it to come back to. We have given up beef almost completely (we do eat fish, seafood, chicken) and are eating vegetarian dinners several times in a typical week. I am more interested in the ground beef substitute than I am "burgers" .
A month in California sounds glorious. I can imagine the fresh fruits and the beaches and the sunshine. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteAs a girl who was raised in Southern California, I really appreciate this post and agree with it 100%. And I will add: You know you are in California when you feel happy & at home. It's the best state out there ... along with Colorado ... too.
