Graffiti and Real Art

On the University of Michigan campus: a fountain by sculptor Carl Milles.
One of my favorite local art works by a great artist.

NOTE: for a survey of fountains by Milles, see this blog post:

On the street: a graffitied electric box.

As I snapped the picture, this car came by.
More street art?

At a park outside of town, graffiti on the bridge — maybe changed since the last time I was here.

  1. I like all of it. Probably a minority opinion, but there's something compelling about graffiti just like there is about works of art that most people would agree are art. Street art, which I would say falls in between these two categories, can sometimes, because of its lack of arty status and thus draws fewer expectations, be more intriguing than art-that-most-consider-art.

  2. What an interesting fountain. I tend the enjoy the usual fountains. Not a fan of the graffiti, however.

  4. Hello,
I am not really a fan of graffiti, I like the murals and the sculpture.

Take care, enjoy your day and have a happy new week!

  6. You have to love the street art. Yes, I've came across some very odd painted vehicles. One was a car that had makeup glued to the hood, and another was covered in all ivy.

  8. That's a very happy photo! I love street art -- but graffiti? Not so much.

  9. I do like some street art / graffiti, just like I enjoy some famous artwork and some famous artwork I do not like. I think the bridge and the electric boxes look really cool.

  10. I think the mural on the electrical box would have been fabulous had it not been tagged. I am sure much thought went into the original design.

I had to laugh at the old, old green mailbox. Wow, that's a REAL oldie.

    Sorry I've been MIA!
