The most exciting birds on our hike in Cave Creek Canyon were the Elegant Trogan and the Montezuma Quail. The trogan is a dramatically colored large bird. There are many species of trogans in Mexico and further south, but of all these, only a few of the elegant trogan species are seen on the US side of the border. We saw one on a previous trip, but were very happy to see it again.
The second bird we really hoped to see was the Montezuma Quail, which was new to us, and it's always exciting to see a new species. We've seen two other types of quail as well, and quite a number of other birds and animals. To see more of Len's photos, click on these from his Flickr set.

We are staying at the Portal Peak Lodge, which is pretty basic and not at all luxurious -- but it's where we need to be. |

As long as the bed is comfortable and the showers are hot and it's clean, that's all that really matters.
ReplyDeleteYou are really near nature at least. It sounds like you are enjoying your trip. And not a mask in sight. Reminds me of before the pandemic.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great little trip, we can hardly wait to travel again but sadly we are still in lockdown. We do a lot of walking in High Park and even though it’s in the middle of the city, there are a wide variety of birds in the park. In fact, recently a wood pecker actually landed on my had because I had a peanut for him! It happened a second and third time!

Glad you have this time out. It sounds like a nice trip for sure. Have a great day today.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen the Elegant Trogan, its such a pretty bird. The fluffy little quail is as cute as the the Elegant Trogan is colorful.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you're having a wonderful time and making new (or perhaps again seeing) friends. Nice sightings, too!
ReplyDeletesuch lovely birds!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have a blast there. Oh, I miss this.
