October Wrap-up

In my kitchen in October I have two new refrigerator magnets among all my bird magnets.

New: flamingos and an eagle.

UPDATE: Jeanie asked where retired magnets go. The answer: I have a big plastic box on a high shelf and they all go in there. Some years ago the theme (now birds) was Mona Lisa. All the Mona Lisa magnets are in a separate box in a closet somewhere. I like Jeanie’s idea that there’s a big wall covered with magnets somewhere, but my house isn’t big enough for that.

Len’s Latest Bread

 Good Dinners from My Kitchen

Apple crisp.

Alice and Len with the apple crisp.

Cabbage salad, stuffed mushrooms, and pork tenderloin.

Savory corn pancakes with lettuce and cottage cheese.

Pastrami with tomatoes and lemons, garlic bread, spaghetti, and chocolate pudding with biscotti.

Lamb chops and salads.

Salad — note the purple carrots!

Outside the Kitchen Door

Beyond the kitchen door: the last of the potted herbs. The first frost this year is very late.

Happy Halloween

One more photo of the giant pumpkin (with me to show how huge it is).

New York Times Headline about decreasing chocolate quality
due to very high prices.

About those chocolate prices:

”Experts say high cocoa prices have triggered a wave of ‘reformulations,’ the industry term for recipe changes. As the Halloween season boosts demand, some candy companies are replacing expensive cocoa butter with other fats, a swap that means their products no longer meet the U.S. regulatory definition of milk chocolate and can no longer be called that on packaging.” (source)

What’s Missing From Our Nation?

Will Congress and the Nation really let this injustice prevail?
A last-minute reprieve is a somewhat distant possibility.
Some states have acted to provide funding for food programs, but others can’t afford to do so.

As I survey my own food for this month and next month, I realize how lucky I am. Heartless actions by the government and our leaders threaten large numbers of citizens with hunger and desperation. SNAP, the federal food assistance program, is critical in the lives of many Americans. This headline is local, but the disaster is national. What’s missing from our nation is compassion and generosity,

“The threat of food assistance disappearing for 42 million Americans, even for a month, has exposed how threadbare the nation’s social safety net has become at a time of persistent inflation and deep federal funding cuts. Filling the void in the coming weeks will strain many food banks and other organizations that were already stretched thin.” (source)

Wonderful meals as usual. Everything looks like a master chef made them. Your herbs don't look too bad for this time of year. I was going to buy some chocolate chips yesterday. They were $5.49 a bag. These are the store brand. As for SNAP There was a stand alone vote on SNAP. The vote had to be 100%. Thune is the only one who voted no.

The voting situation is a little more complicated than you say. The vote wasn’t on SNAP, it was on a rule change that might have resulted in a change in the situation, but would have also had a lot of complications. The rule change may or may not have liberated the funding.

I love purple carrots. Your apple crisp looks like what we'd call apple crumble.

The irony that the country (including me) is giving out candy as SNAP expires is not lost on me. What a cluster.

Hello Mae
I love all your magnets, you have a nice collection. The birds are favorites. Your meals and Len's bread all look delicious.
We live in a rural area with no trick-or-treaters around. It is good not have have the candy in the house, hubby would want to eat it all. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

I think everyone who reads your blog wants to eat at your house. It always is delicious looking, interesting food, beautifully presented at a lovely table. And I can say from personal experience that the company is great! (And Alice is lovely, by the way -- that's a terrific pic with Len). Where do you put the "retired" magnets? I'm envisioning a giant board in some room with every magnet you ever got! We had 15 kids last night. If I'd known when they were there, I would have doubled up on the Oreo packets I gave out. I may try to find a spot where I could donate them so kids could enjoy that might not otherwise have them.

Len's bread looks fabulous! I bet it tastes that way, too.

I bet Len's bread tastes as good as he looks - he really is a master baker! I did a double take with the purple carrots - I don't think I've ever seen them before. They're so vibrant. As always, your food looks delish, especially that Apple Crisp (AKA Apple Crumble in the UK!) Did you get lots of trick or treaters? That pumpkin is massive!

That is one huge pumpkin. I like that photo of you with it. And you ate so well during October. And you have some great owl magnets. I really like them. Happy November Mae. hugs-Erika

We have the same dilemna with our magnets too. We have talked about having a big metal wall in our hallway to put them on, but we haven't gotten any further than talking about it at this point.

Mae, I love all of the good homely food you showcase on IMK. That is the sort of food we should be cooking and promoting, to stretch our budgets when everything is getting more expensive. Love the purple carrots, I see them occasionally here. That was a huge pumpkin. We don't celebrate Halloween here, รค few people do though. Always fun to see what others are doing, but all that merchandise, what do they do with it all. Hope you have a good month.

The freezer we just retired was covered with years of Simpson magnets from snack boxes the kids took to school. I was happy to throw them all out but my 2nd oldest wanted to keep some for the bar fridge in his room.
The cessation of SNAP is a tragedy, and what some people fail to realise is the consequences will affect everyone -crime will go up as desperate people are forced steal to feed their children or themselves, medical services will be under more strain from illnesses exacerbated by hunger and malnutrition, hungry students will fund it even harder to stay focused at school, homelessness will increase when people have to choose between the rent and food, etc etc etc It’s a short sighted and cruel policy.

I can't understand people who refuse to feed people. What is wrong with these people?

I love seeing your bird magnet collection. That's a lot of owls.

My husband works for the government, working and not getting paid the last month. We are more than ready for this to be over. Our library has put out a list of all the free pantries in our area, and are collecting food items for them. I grabbed a list so I could do my part and put food in them as well. Have a great week!

I am so horrified by the callousness with which representatives are playing with people's lives. SNAP benefits have emergency money to cover them in cases like this. Awful.

Mae, your dinners always look so good! I have to say that giant pumpkin is incredible, and fun to see a photo of you as well! I hope your November is full of good times and lots of family to continue celebrating with.
