Junk Food: A History

I just read an mpressive article on junk food in the New York Times: “How America Got Hooked on Ultraprocessed Foods.’ Beginning with the 19th century and early 20th century introductions of products like Jello, Coke, and Crisco, the article uses reproductions of advertisements from food manufacturers to show how the American diet was revolutionized. A few screen shots:

It’s a very informative article, but more importantly it’s fun to read!

… and in other news: Return of a Favorite Flavor

We just love junk food!

You're right -- that was a fun article. (I never got into pop tarts -- I wonder, are they good?)

Junk food is always fun. Right now in my house it's those little Trader Joe candy bars. I think they're called wicked fun. It's a good thing they don't sell them all year. Grin.

It is amazing to me the stuff that people eat. I don’t want to sound snooty and claim to be virtuous, but we never eat junk food. Literally never. If ever you are in my neighbourhood feel free to drop by my house and rummage through my pantry and you won’t find any.

@David — judging people who have different tastes from yours can seem snooty and appear to praise one’s own virtue.

I worry a lot about children who grow up eating mostly junk food. It was astonishing to see what parents sent in lunch boxes. Sometimes nothing in the lunch box had any real nutritional value. In general we don't do a very good job of teaching the importance of eating healthy food. I really liked hearing about a program in Galveston ISD where every school campus has a garden, and the kids not only learn to grow food, but also learn how to prepare delicious dishes from the food they grow.

I couldn't read the article, I had to sign up for the NYT. The thing with junk food is that most of the time it is less expensive than the foods people should be eating. So breakfast and lunch boxes are filled with items not very good for kids. Even if they are advertised otherwise. Plus junk food is fast to prepare for single parents or where both parents work. Is it right? No, but generations have been brainwashed this way. Even school lunches, (when there was school lunch) was pretty horrible food in most cases. I have seen where schools growing gardens and teaching kids to care for and then prepare meals. A great way to teach.
