Time Flies

Autumn is coming

Time to hide some nuts and berries! (This is Mr.Chips who lives on our porch.)

A few leaves have gone from green to yellow, red, or even white.

Recent Reading

Martin Walker’s latest book about detective Bruno in rural France is a sad shadow of the earlier books in this series. There’s no real plot, no real crime, and no real character development! Bruno does cook a lot — to the point where it feels like one is reading a cookbook, with the detailed descriptions of prep and ingredients for one local dish after another. In earlier books, the cooking was an interesting distraction — here it’s totally over used. Sad to see this travesty on what was once a good detective series.

In Bury Your Past detective Tom Janssen in the English town of Wells-by-the-Sea solves the mystery of a body that has been hidden for six years. The body is uncovered by a violent storm that sets a grim mood for the many revelations that explain this and also other crimes. The detective is relatable, and the plot is well-thought-out. I hope to read more of the books by J.M.Dalgliesh.

Published in 1933, Death on the Oxford Road by E.C.R.Lorac is still a suspenseful and enjoyable read — though the author expresses some outdated attitudes towards people who didn’t fit into village society. A body is found on a little-traveled road, where very few cars pass by. Just this lack of traffic is a notable feature of life 90 years ago: cars were a rarity! Life was different then, but the main conventions of detective fiction were already in place.

Samantha Schweblin’s short stories, set in argentina, are a little strange. What peculiar characters she depicts!

Good Food

Left: two different ways that we prepared salmon: patties and pan-broiled.
Right: blueberry pancakes and apple-peach cobbler with ice cream.

Classic dinner: lamb chops and corn-on-the-cob with butter.

Such a cozy read, with autumn’s colors and flavors coming alive. Mr. Chips stealing the show made me smile.

Thank you for sharing all your turning-to-autumn photos. Mr. Chips seems to be enjoying the seasonal changes.

I'm sorry the latest detective Bruno book was disappointing. Still, recipes and cooking in a book plus rural France---I enjoy reading about those things, even when the plot is absent.

For me Mr Chips stole the show with his mouth bulging with nuts to hide away.Your meals look absolutely scrumptious both savoury and sweet. There is no sign of Fall here, not yet.

I liked the Bruno series too but it's sad to see some of our favorite characters without much plot. I have been jumping around and need to get back to some of my fav authors. Love the delicious food. Hugs!

I'm sorry to hear that the latest Martin Walker book was a letdown, especially since you enjoyed the earlier ones so much. It's always a shame when a favorite series loses its way. The other books you mentioned sound great, though—I'm a big fan of mysteries with a solid plot and relatable characters. And your food photos look delicious, especially the blueberry pancakes!

I haven't read Walker's latest, so sad to hear it's not up to his usual. I do enjoy E.C.R. Lorac and usually have one on my TBR list. Cute little visitor!

I love squirrels, they're so cute. We had a lot of them where we used to live but when we moved where we live now we had to get our 3 huge trees cut down because they had tree rats in them, which I had never heard of before. It cost us $1,000 per tree because the trees were so big around and tall.

I hope you enjoy your books, your food looks very good.

Love the chipmunk! I’ve noticed that people now regard their dogs as children.

Oh, I love Mr. Chips!

Nice to see E.C.R. Lorac's books around! Her Inspector Macdonald books are always so soothing to me.

J.M. Dagliesh sounds like an author I should try.

I swear you and Len should open a restaurant. Did you ever watch Rachel Khoo's Paris program where in her tiny apartment she would have a one-couple-only restaurant with a specific dish. I loved that she was making this fabulous food for guests in a kitchen about the size of a bathroom! I think I might have to try the Dalgiesh. This is a Lorac I haven't read. Trying to read them all. But bummer about Bruno. And just LOVED our conversation this week. Believe me, it was a highlight!

Mr. Chips definitely made me smile :) All of that food looks so delicious! I was gonna just have canned soup today, but I may need to go get some better food after all. And those quirky short stories sound interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Your cooking looks very delicious! What a pity that the Bruno series seem to flatten out. I read the first book in the Hidden Norfolk Murder Mystery series because I know and love this area of Norfolk, but I was disappointed. Maybe this second book is better?

Mr. Chips sure has a lot he's storing up! My husband just finished the latest Martin Walker book ... and liked it! Sorry it didn't work for you. He read about the first 5 or 6 books long ago ... then read this one from the library.

We are heading into summer here of course so it's funny to think you guys have it the wrong way round :=) (just kidding). Sad when a book series starts to plummet ...

I'm amazed how Mr. Chips stood still long enough for a picture. Although I've never seen a chipmunk in my neighborhood in Phila, there are lots of them in my son's area in upstate NY. Every time I see one, it's running and then hiding. All of your food looks amazing as usual Mae. My husband would love the lamb chops and corn meal.
