Friday Update

Interesting textures: a flower, a bumblebee, and the concrete of the sidewalk.

Interesting eating: four flavors of brownies from Zingerman’s Bakery.

Recent Reading

Quotes that characterize these two important books that I have been reading:

“We have been given only a taste of what is in store if we fail to ramp down carbon emissions in the years ahead. These crises are inextricably interwoven. Climate change—along with urbanization, poverty, human migrations, and other social determinants—is driving pandemics with increasing frequency. Whether it’s the health of our people or the health of our planet, we are on an unsustainable path. To make matters worse, the rejection of science is being used to target the physical safety and careers of scientists committed to preventing the next pandemic and halting the progression of climate change.”  (Science Under Siege, Michael Mann and Peter Hotez, p. 4)

“Most people now understand that climate change is being driven by the greenhouse effect, the buildup of certain heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere, largely from the burning of fossil fuels and other activities related to energy production. Serious efforts are under way to curtail these kinds of air pollution by phasing in clean sources of energy. But in a grim irony, some of the most promising sources of otherwise green energy are disastrous for migratory birds if they’re put in the wrong places.” (A Season on the Wind, Kenn Kaufman, p. 10)

The details leading up to the Civil War are only vaguely familiar to me.
Clearly, I knew only the outline, and the major participants.
It’s a very tragic story, and I’m not sure I have the courage to read about Reconstruction!

On TV

We have watched episodes 1-5 of The Marlow Murder Club,
and now eagerly await the last episode of this series.

We have watched the first three episodes, and look forward to the rest.

The quotes you shared from Science Under Siege and A Season on the Wind really highlight how interwoven our biggest global challenges are, from climate change to public health, which is a lot to process. www.melodyjacob.com

I will look for Science Under Siege. I'm planning to read A Season on the Wind this fall, and I have a Heather Cox Richardson book I plan to read during Nonfiction November.

I will add Marlow Murder Club to our list.

I got to meet someone from the Great British bake off a few years ago. Love the book about the bird migration and would be interested in it. Happy weekend!

Lovely capture of the bee on the flowers.
Kenn Kaufman has written a lot of books on birds. I have few but not this book on the spring migration. The brownies look delicious. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

I also love taking pictures of textures.
These two books on science and migration sound so good!

It's been a while since we have watched The Great British Bake Off, but we used to enjoy it! I love hearing their accents. Have a great weekend!

That looks like some important reading. I'm glad that you have some fun TV to balance it. I'm enjoying this season of the Great British Baking Show. I haven't started The Marlow Murder Club, but I suspect we'll enjoy that, too.

OOO brownies. I love the idea of 5 flavors. What a treat. And science is under siege in so many ways. the president's UN speech the other day just showed his stupidity and ignorance. And never mind the whole vaccine issue. I am also enjoying the Bake Off, but I need to check out the Marlow Murders. It sounds great. Have a super start to the new week Mae.

I’m currently watching the last few episodes of the Great Australian Bake Off and the first few of the Great British Bake Off, they are the perfect comfort shows.

Wishing you a wonderful reading week

Ohhh 4 flavors of brownies? I on my way. LOL The books look good. You are right if things don't change fast we are in a mess. I don't think I get the British bake off channel any longer. It's a good show.

"Serious efforts are under way to curtail these kinds of air pollution by phasing in clean sources of energy." ????? Your country is actually rolling back progressive steps to curtail air pollution and is encouraging other countries to stop using renewable energy and switch to oil and coal.

The book that I quoted with this statement was published several years ago. I should have mentioned the publication date and also the fact that it’s obsolete.
