Shadows

It’s a cold sunny day in my backyard. If a groundhog showed up, his shadow would be very visible.

In Pennsylvania, Punxutawny Phil did see his shadow, and is hibernating for 6 more weeks, so they say.
And in real life, deep cold temperatures are predicted for the Northeast.

In Howell, Michigan, Woody the Woodchuck (i.e. Groundhog) didn’t pay any attention to her
shadow, and stayed outside. So we should have an early spring, according to this tradition.
Realistically, it’s never spring here in February!

  1. Wow, if we actually did start to see signs of spring by the middle of March, that would count as early around here. That is, if any tender shoots that might be emerging then weren't killed off by a late season frost or an unexpected 10" snowstorm in April or May...

  2. It's a cold 40 degrees here, with overcast skies. Spring has already begun to pop up here in the form of new leaves on trees. It's rarely winter in February here.

  3. Phil may have predicted correctly. This winter has been brutal here. We may get above freezing tomorrow. At least that's the hope. I hope you are in for sunny and warm weather soon, dear.

  4. The groundhog that lives by my back fence did not see his shadow today, but he was a no show so I am not sure his lack of a shadow counts.

  5. It was minus 22 when I got up at a little after five this morning. Now that's winter. It's bright and sunny, however, with little wind, so we'll got for a walk later.

  6. This is fun. Our Fred groundhog must be sleeping somewhere, under knee-deep snow.

  7. This day is an example of people enjoying a myth. Everyone knows the groundhog is not an accurate weather forecaster, yet we enjoy pretending that it is. Someday our descendants will think we were really superstitious.

  8. Here it is too cold for the South. It was 27 this morning in Nashville and it’s only 30 now. It is 40 in Marietta, GA - I should have stayed there this week. I am not used to that extreme weather…

  9. Hello,
I should go and see if the groundhog in my yard saw his shadow, maybe Phil lives too far away for us to have the same weather. It is super cold today only 10° this morning. But, warmer weather is coming on Monday. Cute critter photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great weekend.
