A Brief Visit to Amsterdam

This afternoon from 3 until 5 PM we toured the Reijks Museum in Amsterdam, where we mainly concentrated on the great masters from the Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt and Vermeer.are the most famous, but many others are also very fascinating. Here are just a few images that I particularly liked

Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch” is sheltered in a huge glass cage, and it’s
being restored, so the crowds cant’ see it very well. This boy looked a bit underwhelmed!

The most famous Vermeer in the museum.

These happy drinkers appeal to me. The next image shows how they are sitting in a garden.

Pieter de Hooch, “Figures in a Courtyard,” 1663.

Judith Leyster, “The Merry Drinker,” 1629.

Update December 19: Judith Leyster is honored with a google doodle!

A famous autograph!

A room from one of the magnificent doll houses in the museum.

Birds in Art

From Aelbert Cuyp, “River Landscape,” 1653.

  1. I think a lot of art if not all, will soon be behind glass to protect it from protesters. Your hotel looks lovely.

  3. I'm going to "assume" this is a T Tuesday post in addition to sharing the beauty of the museum in Amsterdam. Your hotel is gorgeous, but the museum photos are what struck me as great. So many of these I was familiar with having seen them in art books over the years. The bird photos, though possibly not as famous, were also beautiful. Thanks for sharing these wonderful drinks with us for T this week, dear Mae.

  7. "underwhelmed" ;-)
Well, art should be behind glass until they get those kids under control that glue and smash everything...

  8. Lots of drinks into today's T day post. Amsterdam is high on my Europe list as it's one country I haven't visited. I will put the Rijksmuseum on my list for certain. Enjoy your trip Mae.

  9. An actual signature is as exciting to see as the art it's a part of. There's something about seeing works like this even if undergoing restoration and/or behind glass.

    Happy T Tuesday!

  15. The paintings of people make the people feel alive, moving, like they could step right out of the painting. That water is being poured...forever...
