A Beautiful Museum: Mauritshuis in the Hague.

Our tour features birding and art. We spent the afternoon at the Mauritshuis, an extraordinary museum.

Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring is probably the most famous painting in the museum.

Still Life by Clara Peeters (active 1611-1612)

The building dates from the seventeenth century. It was the home of Count Johan Maurits.
His fortune came from the 20 year Dutch colonization in Brazil, of which he was Governor-General.
The museum has a painful and interesting exploration of slavery and exploitation under his rule there.

Rembrandt: The Anatomy Lesson

We enjoyed an excellent guided tour. This is our guide, who offered much to think about.
We also had time to explore on our own, and to see a special exhibit of work from the Frick Museum in New York.
This exhibit brought the total number of Rembrandts on display to 13.
