Saturday, I posted my photo of a group of people painting The Rock in the colors of the country of Columbia. Today I walked by again — the original paint was still visible but quite covered with graffiti. Such is the tradition for this Ann Arbor monument (officially designated to honor George Washington, but that is mostly forgotten). Photos by mae sander, © 2021.
Cool finished rock!
ReplyDeleteThat is a bit sad, because it doesn't honor the Colombian cause at all. I am glad the young people have a place to express their feelings, though.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I need to explain that The Rock is constantly painted and repainted by anyone who wants to express a thought or make a statement. So it's never "finished." It's a constant process.
ReplyDeleteOn Saturday, The Rock was covered with a heartfelt message about the situation in Columbia, which is a completely appropriate way to communicate such a thought in Ann Arbor. By Monday, as is totally normal, many other graffiti covered the original message, though quite a few bits of the original -- and the bold colors-- were still visible.
Maybe we are an unusual community.

It´s a living rock... At least people stick to that rock. Here they go at private houses, which is not fair, I think.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. Looks like there are plenty of artistic people in your community!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a constructive way to have an opportunity to express
ReplyDeletethat's a shame! about the graffiti i mean.
