Our recent meals have been highly enjoyable, mostly plant-based, and not very different from what we have eaten in the past. Examining my food photos, I realized that at breakfast time, I usually don’t feel like taking pictures. So I took this one of our morning coffee on the deck for maybe the last time this year:

Morning coffee.

Also outdoors: inviting friends for a distanced snack. We will miss this when the weather changes. |
|
Snack prepared for outdoors: Len's bread with herring and salmon. We serve one plate to ourselves, a separate one to our guests. |
Now for the lunches and dinners:

Eggplant from Jason & Katrina's garden. It was grilled and made into babaganoush. |

Meanwhile, down the street, Kathy's bear enjoyed a nice meal too. For the moment, the bear has gone on vacation, but left a sign that he'll be back. |
I've written several times about how we have stopped buying most meat, especially beef and pork. Our main reason for doing so is objection to the cruel working conditions in industrial slaughter houses and meat-processing plants. These have resulted in major coronavirus outbreaks -- current total: around 60,000 meat workers infected. Plant owners have consistently avoided taking effective measures to protect workers. We have reduced our consumption of chicken considerably as well, and we purchase fish compliant with environmental standards. Reducing meat consumption is also good for the health of the planet, and may result in healthier eating. I find it depressing that meat labels often state that the animals were humanely raised, but never mention humane treatment of meat-processing workers.

Good morning, lovely outdoor setting. It is beginning to get chilly here as well especially in the early mornings now-has been in the 50's.
ReplyDeleteYour dishes look sooooo delicious, and I haven't made an upside down cake in awhile yours looks beautiful. grilled salmon is one of my favorites.
enjoy your day-Kathy
Lovely spot to have morning coffee. Too bad Fall/Winter couldn't remain at a constant 75 degrees. The food looks beautiful and the peppers and tuna salad are going to be my lunch this afternoon. Thanks for the suggestion. I love the Little Bear's table setting. I have the same Blue Willow pattern. Happy T Day!
ReplyDeleteOh looking at all of this makes me hungry!
ReplyDeleteThe food looks so yummy, Mae. Salmon is my favourite. And that upside down pineapple cake is bomb!
ReplyDeleteEvery single photo has my mouth watering. (OK, it's 5.25 so even liver, which I hate, might start it -- but I doubt it!) These all look fabulous and beautifully served.
ReplyDeleteI'm not looking forward to winter, either. It's going to be so difficult....
It's awfil that the industry has been so lax and still won't reform. I hope your warm weather lasts a few more grills!
ReplyDeleteBoy am I glad I´m eating right now! (Black beans, capsicum, mushrooms (do those shrink!), and feta in a bit of broth).
ReplyDeleteYours look soooo yummy!
If meat, just from a real butcher, mostly local - I hope!
Big meat factories here were on TV with bad reputation and hence Corona and now... nothing to be ever heard again.
Your food photos are making me hungry :) Everything looks so delicious.
ReplyDeleteyour food looks wonderful Mae. I love eggplant as you may have guessed from my eggplant relish photo. We are coming into spring as you know and it is starting to get very warm. in fact it looks like a storm out there thru the window, as i type. Weird times for us all. I keep telling hubby that He of the orange face will get back in but he doesn't want to believe it. i don't either but i fear he has too many 'helpers' like Putin.
ReplyDeletekeep well

Good eating!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have been creative with your food! Your pineapple upside down cake looks amazing. I admire your commitment to bringing awareness to the poor conditions for meat workers!
ReplyDeleteTuna salad might make it on my menu this week!
ReplyDeleteI love salmon but John doesn't care for it, I might pick up some for myself this week.
Our temps have been in the mid 50s (14-14C) this week.
Your food looks delicious and colourful. That fruit bread and compote fruit sounds like my way to start a day! And that teddy is very cute! I remember being able to sit outside at the start of our first lockdown and am really looking forward to some nice weather (just wish I could have a swim). Your alfresco dining looks great. I really like your last point about humanely treated abbatoir workers as well as raised animals. It is such a complex topic that I think it is too much for a lot of people to think about (me included a lot of the time)
ReplyDeleteYour food looks so delicious!
