Dinner and the end of Mary Berry

Britain's Best Home Cook Season 2 was our weekend binge. For the final episode, revealing the winner, we decided to eat dinner while watching. This is the first time we’ve eaten a meal in front of the TV since the lockdown started!

We made open-faced sandwiches with pain de mie flavored with pepper (bread recipe from the Poilâne cookbook) along with mayo, hard-boiled egg slices, avocado, dill, and smoked salmon. Our salmon preparation was nowhere near as ambitious as the salmon dishes that the contestants made for their final “rustle-up” challenge — but our food was still quite good. We sipped a glass of white wine, sat back, and enjoyed the competition. In case you haven’t watched yet I won’t say who won, but I was very much in agreement with the judges’ decision.

Slicing the avocado.

  9. Right, I need to buy a new slicer, our red one is broken. Since weeks! Which is not that urgent as you can hardly get good avos here...
Tim Mälzer used to have such competition shows, too, but I prefer to get explained and learn... (as I´m still a beginner).

  10. Your food looked delicious and when I saw the slicer [mine was retired many months ago] its something I will be seeking out when I feel safe going shopping again. I only ever used it for eggs so cutting the avocado is a great tip.
I enjoy cookery programs, not always what I would buy or store, but they do make me think out new ideas.
    Happy T day wishes.

  14. Your meals sounds delicious. Although I typically favor eating at the dining table, I also enjoy 'dinner and show,' every now and then, by eating in front of the telly... especially if there is a good mystery on.

  17. Your meal sounds really lovely, and I don't believe eating it in front of the TV is a sin really (OK it shouldn't be a habit). And watching Mary Berry while eating? I couldn't think of better company.
Thank you for your comments on my blog. Yes, I have read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I found it entertaining. Hubby couldn't get on with the format of the letters and messages.
I agree that the marching band is creepy. My home country the Netherlands was also occupied, and having been born just after the war, I grew up with the stories of my parents and their peers. My grandmother hid jews and my auntie survived a concentration camp.My mother and her family suffered physical hunger during the last winter when one half of the country was liberated and the other half wasn't. The Germans couldn't care less and took everything edible away and left the population to starve. My dad was taken by force and transported to Germany to do forced labour on the railways. Because he was an educated man and spoke several languages, he had to work as an interpreter too.I know for a fact that he had guilt problems afterwards. He had never been given the chance to fight for his country.
My mother is 96 and mentally very alert. I phone her every day and sometimes we talk about the war. Interesting.
    Happy T-Day,
    Lisca

  19. Your sandwich sounds delicious, although salmon brings me out in big spots! I still love it though and have it if I don't have plans to see anyone for a few days! I love cooking programmes and the Best Home Cook is one of my favourites! I stopped watching the Great British Bake Off when Mary Berry didn't sign up when it changed channels in the UK! Happy T Day!
