Update: In Julia Child's Kitchen

Julia Child: from an article published today in the New Yorker.

Last weekend, as I mentioned in my previous post, we visited Julia Child's kitchen in the American History Museum at the Smithsonian. I love Julia Child, love her recipes, and love seeing her exact table, chairs, stove, utensils, and even her garbage can. This exhibit has been on hiatus while the museum was being remodeled.

In today's New Yorker, there's a picture of Julia Child in this kitchen, photographed in her home at some time in the past -- probably quite long ago, as she appears rather young.  See: "The Passionate, Progressive Politics of Julia Child" by Helen Rosner. A very intense article!

  1. I too love Julia Child, everything about her. I'll never forget the day she was in Chicago for an expo and I decided to go to work instead. I still get mad every time I think about it. I knew the museum was undergoing remodeling and would love to visit it again just to see her kitchen. Great photo of her!

  3. I want to visit her kitchen one day! I do not remember it from my last visit there (25+ years ago).

  4. Don't you just love her? Love her strength, her life, her passion? Have you ever read the book of letters between Julia and Avis DeVoto? It really shows the full Julia -- the wife, sister, daughter. The contentious and often strained relationship with her conservative father. Her political feelings, as shared with a dear and intimate friend. It's wonderful. If I hadn't given the only copy I had away to a Julia fan long ago, I'd send it to you.

  5. Mae, thanks for tagging this article on JC. I wasn't aware of JC's political side. I visited her kitchen at the Smithsonian several months ago (before the 'shut down). It was surrounded by glass so you couldn't get too close to it. Whenever I think of Julia, I think of her recipe 'Boned Duck in Pastry' that I was brave enough to tackle! Bon Courage!
