Afternoon in Montmartre

As you can see from the long shadows, we arrived in Montmartre in mid afternoon. (Days are very short in Paris now.)

We walked up the street towards the Sacré-Coeur Basilica, which is not one
of our favorite monuments for a number of reasons.

Some of us rode the Funicular up the last hill.

We had trouble finding the Eiffel Tower from the terrace in front of the Basilica. Luckily we brought our own.
Note that you can see the Tour de Montparnasse on the horizon -- it's very close to our hotel.

We walked around to another location and found the real Eiffel Tower.

A Wallace Fountain in Montmartre.

In the past we've seen many of these fountains on streets around the city. This is our first one this trip. They were financed by an Englishman, Sir Richard Wallace, and installed throughout Paris to supply drinking water to Parisians. They date from the 1870s: the same time as the start of construction of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica -- though the Basilica was not completed until 1914. 

Miriam and Alice were amused by this street art. They were also amused when we stopped at a chocolate shop
and bought a few macarons as a snack.
