Evelyn's Sourdough

Evelyn has been experimenting with sourdough. This loaf was a real success! She said I could post her photos here.
These are Evelyn's sourdough starters. One is named Lois, from wild yeast.
The other is named Arthur, and was purchased from King Arthur himself a few weeks ago.
Lois the starter dates to last fall, when Evelyn decided to try making sourdough.
The starters grow rapidly!
Yesterday we heard a story about a sourdough starter from someone who went to culinary school. Her bread instructor's starter was around 20 years old, and he was quite proud that he'd been feeding and nurturing it for that long. One day, a novice student who didn't understand much about anything used up the whole starter in a batch of bread. Evidently he was distraught!

Evelyn's sourdough breakfast: pancakes and waffles -- I wish I were in Fairfax to try them too. Miriam was enjoying them!
Alice made beautiful waffle arrangements.
Sourdough pizza.
Strata made from extra sourdough bread, onions, ham, and more.

  1. Yum! I'm not good with keeping starters, and gave up a long time ago, but I feel that instructor's pain!

  3. My deepest hope (and probably one of Rick's, too) is that one day, our Baby Grand will grow up to love to bake and experiment in the way your beautiful Evelyn does. I think it's fabulous she is so into it and her bread looks gorgeous -- artisan bakery-worthy. (So do the waffles!)
