I've now watched the first three episodes of Season 2 of "Chef's Table" from Netflix. I am not enjoying it anywhere near as much as I liked Season 1, and far far far from as much as I liked Pollan's series "Cooked"!

Here's Dominique Crenn, subject of Episode 3 of "Chef's Table." Born in France, owner of a famous restaurant in San Francisco, but I still don't know how she accomplished what she has accomplished. The show just didn't tell me. |
The new season seems to me to be mostly talking. Not nearly enough about food. Too much about the private lives of the chefs, and not as much that connects life and art. I'm just not satisfied with all this philosophizing. Further, this year's chefs aren't as relatable as those of the previous season. And when food appears, which is rare...

You get these semi-abstract images that offer absolutely no way to imagine what it might taste like or even what ingredients might be going into it. Looks like it came from the forest floor. Too arty for me. I don't know if I will watch the rest of this season or not. |
In around an hour, I plan to watch the first episode of Season 3 of "The Great British Baking Show."
|
From the trailer for tonight's first episode. I hope it's as good as the previous seasons! Because the winner received so much attention when she won on British TV, I already know how it comes out. |
Note: all these images are from screen captures.
I haven't see either show. I'll have to see what's available on streaming. I know Great British Baking Show is quite popular, but I'm not big on competition / game shows.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how the GBBS doesn't have any of the obnoxiousness of American competitions on food TV.
ReplyDeleteThe only cooking competition show we watched when we had satellite was Hells Kitchen and that was so bombastic.i see people talke about this one on Twitter though, I live vicariously through them getting information. Too bad season 2 wasn't as good as the first.
ReplyDeleteI love food competition shows. My favourite by far is the Australian and New Zealand My Kitchen Rules!!
ReplyDeleteWe did enjoy The British Baking competition, but none of the others. I would probably agree with you on this current one.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen either one, but I just read that baking one was very unlike US shows of its ilk. Food tv has changed a lot from when I first watched it twenty some years ago. I don't have cable anymore, but I wouldn't watch if I could. I hate all those competition shows. But might try the Brit baking one.
ReplyDeleteI love The Great British Bake Off-I did not realize season three is out. How funny that both you and Beth featured Hazan.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up. Have a great week. Cheers from Carole's Chatter
