The Point Loma Lighthouse was built in 1855, and was in use until around a century ago, when a new one was built. It's been restored recently -- the lighthouse keeper's kitchen and living quarters were in the lighthouse building itself. The documentation mentions the "simple" life -- this is really like a joke: they had to haul all supplies up in a wagon, carry water, chop wood, and all kinds of things that the word "simple" just doesn't really cover.The lighthouse stands in the Cabrillo National Monument. The monument commemorates Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who in 1542 was the first European to land on what is now the West Coast of the United States. It's surrounded by a military base.
