The Gnawsons Are Back and Other Stories

For several years, a busy beaver team has been building and rebuilding a dam and a beaver lodge at the local Botanical Gardens. We took a walk there recently as shown in the photos. Their original dam doesn’t seem to be in use now, but a few more beaver structures have been constructed along the way, as shown above.

Fungus on a log. Is that poison ivy behind the log? Probably not but I wouldn’t touch it.

Indigenous Peoples Day

A sign in the gardens in appreciation of local indigenous people.

From a trip a few years ago: the opinion of the people of Alert Bay of the salmon farms in their waters.

  1. I love Norval Morrisseau's art! He was Canada's greatest indigenous artist. I've seen his massive painting "Androgyny" displayed a couple of times over the years -- once at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa in a huge retrospective of his work in 2006, and again just this summer at a big indigenous art exhibition in Regina, Saskatchewan. It is truly awe-inspiring!

  2. What a nice walk and to see the beavers are back. I might check to see if the library has the Ronda book about L & C among the Indians. I've read the Ambrose book about them.

  8. Beavers here you see but in the zoo. And Indigenous art... in places like mine or the museum. Perth on the other hand... all outside to enjoy.
