At the Highlands Amusement Park
A Google trip back to the end of May when I was in elementary school
 |
Our big school event at the end of May up to sixth grade was always held at the Forest Park Highlands, a big amusement park. Each clild received several tickets for the most popular rides. I rarely went on the Ferris Wheel. Too scary! |
 |
| I was happier on the merry-go-round. (Note the murals on the center post. Shared with Sami.) |
 |
| The roller coaster really challenged me. I never liked heights or fast downward motion! |
 |
Those who love the rollercoaster would wave their arms during descent. The one or two times I was convinced to take this ride, I hid my eys. |
 |
My mother and my two aunts always accompanied us to the school picnic. They brought lunch for us to eat, always including strawberries and pineapple in a jar. |
All photos of the old Forest Park Highlands as well as of the fruit salad are from google image searches. A huge fire destroyed all the rides in the early 1960s, and it’s now the site of a community college. I wonder if anyone remembers it at all!
What we are eating this week
 |
| Lettuce topped with a cheeseburger and chilli. |
 |
| Bagels with smoked salmon, hummus, and cream cheese. Also cherries. |
 |
| Chicken on the barbcue. |
 |
| Dinner with friends. |

I love robins, but we don't have any native to my part of the world. I can tell that old amusement park holds a plethora of memories for many. Happy FFO!
ReplyDeleteLovely post
ReplyDeleteOur 8th grade trip, before we moved onto high school, was at an amusement park. It was fun, but now that park is gone. :( And I bought cherries this week too. You always have such yummy food Mae. And that robin in the nest is a great shot. Have a super rest of your Friday and start to the weekend. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteThat photo of the robin is brilliant. In my youth I loved the roller coaster. Now I would probably pass out. LOL The salad with cheeseburger topping it my kind of salad. Hmmmm strawberries and pineapple sounds so good. Your meals are always so good and dinner with friends is the best. Thank you for sharing with FFO and have a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteLove the robin's nest photo and amusement parks delighted me as a child ~ good photo of lunch with friends ~
ReplyDeleteHugs ^_^
I love seeing what you have cooked/prepared. Yippee it's cherry season here too! I love cherries.
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to look back at things you did when you were at school. Especially now this amusement park is no longer there.
Happy Friday,
Lisca
I would love to eat at your house and I had fun revisiting the end of the school year exclamation Point thanks for this beautiful post and for your nice visit period my husband is declining in care with dementia and Frailty and it's a very challenging situation period I really haven't been around to my blog friends as much as I would likePeriod but I want you to know how much it means to me to be part of our company
ReplyDeleteYour post brought back a lot of nostalgia, and the food photos made me hungry!
ReplyDeleteHI Mae, As soon a I saw that roller coaster it reminded me of the Cyclone in Coney Island. Even as a teenager I didn't like roller coasters bur once my cousins convinced me to go and I was terrified the entire time. Never again. We are enjoying California cherries right now too which are ripe and sweet. Loved the photo of the Robin's nest. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteHow are the cherries? I have been resisting getting some because -- well, usually not so good! But they look gorgeous. Again, you've all been eating well at Chez Mae! I don't do rollercoasters. Nope. Not me! But I love the carousel and these are great vintage photos too.
ReplyDeleteHello Mae,
ReplyDeleteLove the cute Robin on the nest! My 8th grade school trip was to Hershey's Amusement Park. Your meals all look yummy, Hubby and I both love cherries. Great photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend! PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.
What a wonderful dinner with friends! Your mention of the end-of-school time at an amusement park which no longer exists reminds me of what is going on right now at my town's high school, where my husband and our sons and I all graduated, a block from our house---the last two original buildings are being demolished this summer, including our school cafeteria. Oh, and we have a Carolina Wren nesting on our porch.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great shot of that robin.
ReplyDeleteI went to Worlds of Fun in KC, Mo one year with friends. They encouraged me to ride a roller coaster that rolls upside down. That was my one and only time I went on a roller coaster. Never again. I also LOVE Merry Go Rounds.
You always have the best food and drink photos. Happy belated FFO.
I love food from the grill, and fresh fruit. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI ate cherries this week too, delicious. I am petrified of merry-go-rounds. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Mae.
ReplyDeleteI love those murals on merry go rounds - they're often a piece of history caught in time. #MuralMondays
ReplyDeleteIt's always a pleasure to have dinner with friends! We had cherries this week, too... so glad they're in season again.
ReplyDeleteI love the merry-go-round. Especially the old one. Yours is beautiful. Oh and those cherries..... It's still to early for cherries here
ReplyDeleteYes, merry-go-round - nothing more! But what a cool event We never had anything like that from school.
ReplyDeleteOh, and such yummy food!
